Jacinta Gulisano might be the next Fergie. Or Beyonce, if her latest recording sesh in LA is anything to go by. And she’s just getting started… )

You might recognise Jacinta from a little show called The X Factor. In 2013 she was a Runner Up with her singing group Third Degree (they’ve since disbanded). But even though millions of viewers watched her journey, Jacinta is still getting used to people knowing who she is - not to mention her 70 thousand fans on Instagram.

“They come up to me on the street and introduce themselves, it’s crazy,” the 20 year old Sydney musician says.

We’ve grabbed Jacinta days after returning from a whirlwind trip in LA, where she was busy recording with some of the best music producers in the biz.

“It was my first solo trip over there, and it was all about discovering what type of artist I want to be,” she says.

“I was lucky enough to work with the producer Printz Board, who wrote a lot of big Black Eyed Peas tracks like Don’t Funk with my Heart. I also recorded with DQ (David “DQ” Quinones) who has worked with Beyonce. He asked me to sing something and he goes, “Oh I did something like this on a Beyonce track!” I totally lost it – she’s my ultimate.”

We’ll be hearing the product of those studio sessions soon - but think more Alicia Keys, less Queen Bey.

“I wrote six tracks in six weeks. Some are funky like Bruno Mars and others are soulful like Alicia. The aim now is to get them sounding like a unit so they can be recognised as my songs – my music. I’m working towards an EP or album.”

“It’s good to have the rejection because it helps you build a thicker skin”

It’s not an easy gig, being a young female musician in an industry considered to be a bit of a boy’s club. But Jacinta is prepared to push hard for her career (she’s wanted this since she was seven and singing the 90’s Jennifer Paige hit Crush into her hairbrush.)

“You have to face a lot of setbacks,” she says.

“Sometimes it’s not your talent – it can be based on a look or something small like your height. I’ve had auditions where I’ve come this close and then fallen short. It’s hard at the time, but it’s good to have the rejection because it helps you build a thicker skin.”

When it comes to staying motivated, she looks to the new wave of empowered female artists – think Beyonce, Jessie J and Ariana Grande.

“I think it’s great we’ve got female role models that are so powerful and talented. The success of Iggy Azalea shows us as Australians that we can strive to be like that – it’s possible to make it big time.”

It also helps to have your Girl Gang around you for support, something Jacinta never takes for granted.

“It’s so important to have your girls! I’ve got a few Girl Gangs – my high school friends, the X Factor crew, and then the girls I went to America with. We’re all young Aussie artists striving for the same dream. It’s so good to have girlfriends who know what you’re going through.”

She’s also had ongoing support from her X-Factor mentor Natalie Bassingthwaite.

“She’s awesome - I call her and ask for advice all the time.”

So what advice would Jacinta have for all the girls out there chasing their own goals?

“Know that you’re special in your own way. You don’t need to be like anyone else – embrace who you are and people will love you. And remember that everything happens for a reason, so just try to enjoy it all.”

I love how Rihanna dresses – she can be out there but she always gets it right on!

It’s really about what helps me stand out. When I was in LA I was told to go into a shop and try on something I would never normally wear, a look that would catch people’s attention. That’s ‘dressing like a star’ right!?
